We’re updating our website: If something looks different or you can’t find what you need, contact hello@musicformemoriescharity.org.uk
Music for Memories was founded in 2018 by trustee Rachel Bignell, supported by her father, Trevor. Rachel, who worked in care, was inspired by the documentary Alive Inside and her personal journey with her grandmother, who had dementia.
The charity paused during the COVID pandemic. As life changed, Rachel moved to Yorkshire and Trevor retired to the Forest of Dean.
In summer 2023, Trevor and fellow trustee Jackie saw a need in the local community. With the Charity Commission’s agreement, the geographical label was removed, and in March 2024, Music for Memories Charity (No. 1185979) was relaunched in the Forest of Dean.
Today, with 10 volunteers, we’ve gifted over 190 personalised music headsets, and we’re gently expanding into Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Caldicot, and Gloucestershire.
We believe the journey through memory loss begins long before the late stages — often starting with a diagnosis that can feel confusing, isolating, and frightening.
Dementia affects over 982,000 people in the UK today — a number expected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040.
Many individuals with dementia experience social isolation, anxiety, and memory loss, leaving families and caregivers searching for meaningful ways to stay connected.
Music is a powerful, proven tool in dementia care. Familiar songs can reduce agitation, lift mood, and spark memories long thought lost.
Yet access to personalised music is often limited — especially for those living in care homes or without regular family support.
That’s where Music for Memories steps in.
We create bespoke playlists, drawn from a person’s life and musical history, delivered through specially adapted headsets —
Free of Charge.
At Music for Memories Charity, we continually adapt our equipment to meet the unique needs of each person we support.
3D-printed switches: Some users found the small on/off button tricky to use. Thanks to the generosity of a few brilliant helpers, we now fit purple 3D-printed switches to make power control simple and accessible.
Secure SD cards: SD cards can sometimes spring out of their slot if knocked or fiddled with. Our trustee, Bob, devised a clever solution — a tiny protective screw that keeps the card safe and secure while still allowing easy updates.
Alternative listening options: Not everyone is comfortable wearing a headset. For those who are bed-ridden, visually impaired, at end of life, or who simply prefer not to wear something on their head, we now offer adapted Anker speakers. These provide the same personalised music experience in a way that feels natural and comfortable for the individual.
Every adaptation is guided by feedback from users and their families. Our goal is always the same: to make music as easy, enjoyable, and personal as possible.
